Carbon emission has been on the rise worldwide, following the active processes of industrialization taking shape globally. Indeed, the rate at which the atmosphere is increasingly getting saturated with the gas is at an alarming rate leading to the temperature rise and the general greenhouse effect. Despite the usefulness of the gas in various processes like plants physiological process of photosynthesis, high accumulation of carbon in the atmosphere leads to the greenhouse effect. The effect of this gas is overwhelming. Consequently, this paper seeks to find out some of the feasible high emitters of the gas and core structures that lead to excessive emissions.

Furthermore, the paper will address the challenges and provide some prospective recommendations that could be used to arrest the situation and minimize emissions in the long-run. In its scope, the paper will use Honda Motor Company as a case example of the carbon emitters and explore the structure and organs of the company as well as the measures that the company has taken to reduce emissions.

Honda Company has in the past made tremendous progress in reducing the carbon gas emissions. These efforts came in line with the company’s progress in its program for the Environmental footprint on its products which have become a lifetime commitment of the company. In the recent past, the company has appeared in an exclusive segment, the first to announce its estimated worldwide carbon dioxide emissions through its automobiles and power products in the process of the customer use. According to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG), the level of carbon emission is highest from the perspective of the lifecycle of Honda output. The company has launched tremendous efforts to curb the rising levels of carbon emission which have threatened the brand of the company. To achieve this, the company has put in place various measures that would help to cut the carbon emissions both from the internal settings and the regional cooperation with other agencies charged with the same mandate (Nelson, Moody & Mayo 1998).

The company has there developed a timeline projection in line with the 2020 global carbon emissions target. Indeed, the target set to reduce emissions from automobiles by 30 per cent in 2020, the company was in a position to achieve 9.5 per cent reduction by the 2001 fiscal year. Furthermore, emissions from motorcycles and power products of the company has had been reduced by 24.1 and 13.5 per cent respectively. Besides this, the company engages in internal research aimed at identifying effective means of reducing carbon emissions in the production line which is the scope one of the carbon footprint. However the company’s management ought to improve the companies’ corporate structure in order to accommodate the other partners and cooperate with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) as well as World Resource Institute (WRI) which are actively involved in the fight (Shook 1988).

Honda Company needs to develop internal policies aimed at improving the production process that would reduce the amount of carbon emissions. Development of Jazz Hybrid, Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) by the company is a step towards the production of an environmental friendly automobile. However, this product is confined to the Thailand users despite its huge impact on the reduction of carbon emission. Certainly, the company should engage in vigorous researches on the possibility of bulk production with minimal cost in order to spread the IMA technology to all prospective users worldwide. Indeed, this would further increase the tendency of the company to reach the 2020 projection idea and down play the vast rise in carbon emissions worldwide. Besides this, huge investment needs to be done on the research for cost-effective ‘advanced and clean concept’ under which the production can be achieved.

The latest attempts by the company to reduce carbon emissions of the automobiles and fleet for 2010 fiscal year were projected at 10 per cent but exceeded by 2.4 percent to stand at 12.4 per cent. Indeed, this measure indicated the potential base of the company to reduce emissions without scaling down its operations. Recessions in the global market have however resulted in the failure of achievement of the target as the scale of production narrows down as in the case of 2008/2009 fiscal year. The challenge emanated from the inability of the company to accommodate the decline in demand for its products resulting from unfavorable economic climate at the time.

To address exogenous challenges like economic fluctuations which adversely affect the company’s lied down structure, the management should develop sustainable policies. Such policies should accommodate economic diversities and embrace the achievement of the set target in the reduction of carbon emission which will further lead positive brand image. With the advancement of technology, Honda company executives should engage in vigorous researches for the development of New Hybrid Strategies besides Civic, Insight, sporty CR-Z and Acura ILX hybrids. These hybrids will enhance the fight for a carbon emission reduction strategy through the use of locally available materials and resources. Further invention in the motor vehicle production of Honda Company, is the development of electric vehicles.

Electricity is one of the friendly sources of energy that would be employed to lessen the use of fossil fuel and the formidable emission of carbon in the long-run. However, fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) section of production in the company remains underdeveloped despite its ability to reduce carbon emission by leaps and bounds. Further development is the establishment of vehicles that use gasoline gases. Indeed, following this innovation, the company was able to scale down total emissions of carbon by 25 per cent. However, despite all the efforts of the company to achieve environmentally friendly automobiles, the market remains confined to a smaller region for the new models, including the civic natural gas vehicle whose market is confined in California and other parts of the west. In order to reach its target, the company has to minimize the amount of carbon emissions in the short-run. There are some ways in which the company can reduce its carbon emission (Miller & Smith 2006).

The company may incorporate a variety of ways that may respond to fight for reduction of carbon emissions. These methods would however result in business challenge in the short-run and may therefore require thorough preparation before they can be embarked on. To begin with, the company should scale down the production of personalized vehicles that discourage car pooling. The result for the above is the halt to unnecessary increment in the number of personal vehicle and the resultant high amount of carbon emission. This is fatal however, if the company ends up reducing the number of personal vehicles in the absence of the users’ consent. To achieve this, company should engage in thorough campaigns to sensitize the users on its viability. Additionally, the company should encourage its prospective customers to purchase hybrid cars which have minimal carbon emission (Manufacturing & Umeda 2012).

In order to achieve the targeted energy carbon reduction, Honda should liaise with other automobile manufacturers in efforts to fight emissions as the European manufacturers. Climate change is a worldwide challenge that affects the automobile industries at a great span. The resultant cooperation will enable the manufacturers consolidate various manufacturing technologies with the incorporation of alternative fuels and sharp traffic management. Besides this, it would also enable the company to mobilize efficient Carbon-related taxation.

Honda Company should restructure its production processes to accommodate and encourage the manufacture of automobiles that use bio-fuels. Consequently, the use of Bio-fuels would reduce the carbon emission through a revised approach. To achieve this, the company needs to collaborate with fuel companies in order to guarantee the availability of such fuel in the world market and broaden the company’s sales in turn. To mitigate the notion on the in-viability of the alternative fuels created by the EU policies, the company should embark on production of high quality autos to lynch the market popularity worldwide.

Honda Company is perhaps one of the renowned companies for the automobile production in the world. Currently, the ‘evil’ of the greenhouse effect is an issue of global concern. Consequently, manufacturers have been in constant competition to produce the most competitive models of automobiles that would be recognized globally as a contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emission.

The European Union has also made legislation for the recognition of the best car manufacturers with regard to carbon dioxide reduction, through friendly production methods that would embrace carbon reduction. As a result, the company should seize the opportunity to produce automobile fitted with eco-navigators that would cut down the amount of carbon production as well as produce automobile fitted with catalytic converters. This move would help the company to build up its reputation through the recognition by the European Union. Furthermore, this would help the country to comply with the European Union’s target of less than 130 g/km emission of Carbon dioxide for all EU registered vehicles (SHOOK 1988).

Gradually, the company should adopt alternative sources of energy in the production line like electricity that would result in minimal carbon emissions if any. On the other hand, this would minimize workers exposure to toxic elements of carbon. As a result, workers carry good picture of the company and address it as a part and parcel of the owner leading to high output generation and low marginal cost. Following the increased turn over, the company can expand its production and invest on research that would aid in the adoption of hybrid technology.

To further enhance a good reputation, the company should establish worldwide campaign aimed at popularizing their brands and encourage people to plant trees as a means of reducing toxicity of gas through reduced accumulation. To achieve this target, the company should cooperate with other agencies charged with carbon reduction campaign, like the Campaign Against Climate Change (CACC) of Britain (Sweet 2006).

Carbon accumulation leads to the realization of the greenhouse effect. This effect is not only harmful to the end users but also to the manufacturers. Indeed, Honda is one of the companies that are engaged in active production of cars and other autos.  Some of the harmful effects of the gas are: ecological disturbances, raised sea level and shortage of food supply. Certainly, the global habitats are pegged on the balance between rains and temperature supply. Dryness leads to the encroachment of desert fires. In the process, some of the important raw materials used in the various industrial productions are brought to a halt and may lead to extinction. For instance, latex used in making the vehicle tyres among other products is also used in making of the automobiles through ecological disturbances.

On the other hand, global warming results in the melting of ice around the polar region. Consequently it leads to the raising of the sea levels and causes floods in most regions with the close proximity to the shores. Furthermore, this may also lead to population disturbances causing migration. This indirectly toggles the market of the various products and automobiles inclusive. Furthermore, the rising sea level affects shipping, thus the transportation of various products including heavy machineries. Besides that, global warming leads to an acute shortage in supply of food and crops survival is nullified. These factors affect car manufacturing industry in a variety of ways and pose a threat to the flourishing of the trade and other economic activities.

Honda Company produces cars in a saturated environment of manufacturers. Certainly, this is the main reason for the high competition for both raw materials and market for the products. However, the company faces a more favorable condition of the market than its competitors due to its key concern on initiatives that would reduce the capacity of greenhouse gas-carbon production. Some of the major competitors of Honda in the manufacturing sector are: Suzuki Motor Corporation, Nissan Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation. However, the company plays a significant role in ensuring positive implication of their production activities amidst many challenges raging from bad economic conditions, war in prospective market destinations to greenhouse effects emanating from both their internal and external operations thus posing a challenge on the environment and other physical structures.

In addition, the company should adopt the method of carbon capture. This method taps the carbon and stores it using hybrid technology in deep underground formations. However, to use this technology, there is a need for beefed up energy supply as the industrial fuel consumption would increase by approximately 20 per cent but the carbon emission will be absolutely down played. In addition, capture and storage of carbon dioxide would raise the level off operating costs by 40 per cent. To mitigate the effect of this on the business feature of the company, the company should liaise with the policy makers of the taxation policy in order to incorporate the cost of using this technology in order to cut down the resultant carbon emissions. To enjoy more advantages, the company should also embrace worldwide sensitization on the new features of its autos in order to capture a wider market and to suspend unhealthy competition that would rise probably from the rising cost of its products. Through the information, customers’ preference on the new products is beefed up and the entire sale of the brand rises significantly.

In conclusion, greenhouse gases emission is an issue that requires urgent attention. The concern has taken shape in virtually all regions of the world as side effects of such emission have reached all the corners of the globe. Besides causing food shortage and raising sea level, cumulative emission of nitrogen oxides leads to breathing problem and the damaging of Ozone layers of the atmosphere. Consequently, the harmful ultra-violet rays from the sun reach the earth surface causing discomfort. For human, skin diseases result while the catchment areas dry up causing human suffering on earth. When human lifestyle is disturbed, the manufacturers are not at peace neither as their potential market is disturbed as a result (Willey & Chameides 2007) Therefore, it is the responsibility of the manufacturers to ensure low carbon and other greenhouse gases emission resulting from their production.

In addition to embarking on measures to mitigate the carbon emissions in the production line, companies and other prospective emitters should adopt permanent carbon management plans and strategies and also develop reduction goals and work towards meeting them. Indeed, the entire world should be focused on a total reduction of carbon emission. The government should impose regulations on the production of environmentally hazardous elements and the sequential importation of such products. However, the developed countries which are the main contributors to global warming resulting from GHG emissions into the atmosphere should be pressurized by the international community to refrain from environmentally unfriendly means of production (Halmann & Steinberg 1999).
